Summer University

UPDATE: The applications for this year are closed. Possibly open calls will be made in a couple of weeks on aegee.org/su, for events that have free places left.

During the summer AEGEE organizes exchanges between university students all over Europe. This project gives you the possibility to discover another university city and its student culture during a period of two weeks in the summer for less then 200 Euro.

Before any misunderstandings arise: You are not going to study at a foreign university. Its not like ERASMUS or ATHENS programmes. What you will do there is, together with local students and other participants from all of Europe you ll have socializing activities, city tours, parties, cultural exchanges, and besides this there will be also some extra activities organized depending of the type of the SU. There are SU's where you can learn a language, other ones include lots of sport activities, travel through a country or green SU's with Environment & Climate as theme.

To be able to go to a SU, you must first join a AEGEE-local (AEGEE-Delft in this case). The full program can be found in the SU-booklet. You can get it in the office, or read it on-line.

The deadline to apply is April 30! About 2 weeks later, the selections will be announced.

If you have any further questions, you may contact the board, post a message on our Summer University Forum, or come to the office. There you can also get a hardcopy of the SU booklet.

The Summer University project in detail

Every summer some 90 AEGEE locals across whole Europe organize SU. Each participating local chooses how and what they organize, and thereby the balance between the educational, cultural and/or other content is always different. It’s important to realize that SU is organized by and for students. So, don't expect a 5 star hotel, but you will nonetheless enjoy (even more).

Another difference between a travel agency is that you can't pick a journey and start packing your bags. Because the organizers strive to bring as much different cultures as possible together, and because the number of participants for a SU in a particular city is limited, you need to apply 1 to 3 SU's. On basis of your motivation letter you ll hopefully get selected. This is indeed a annoying but necessary aspect of SU to ensure cultural diversity.

Cost

The participation fee for an event of two weeks is not more than 200 Euro (includes accommodation, activities and two meals a day). The other things like drinks at parties, souvenirs, more food and of course the journey aren't includes in the fee. Although you can use for the last thing the typical AEGEE technique (hitchhike! Ever traveled to Poland in a Porsche?), you often need low-cost airline in practice. This can be very cheap when you book early.

Activities

What you do during a SU, is largely dependent of the SU you choose. If you choose a SU where you can learn a language, then you will study a few hours a day. If you choose a SU which is more focused on discovering a country or a region, then you will visit many sights. And there are many more variations. No matter the type of SU, you will be the whole time with a international group of people, whereby you learn different cultures, customs, mentalities,... Additionally, at each SU you will visit the main tourist attractions in the area, the beach (if there is any nearby), and daily the parties.

A very popular activity during a SU is the 'European Night': everyone brings a national snack or prepares a national dish, and then tastes the food of other countries. Similarly also with the drinks on the same night, just before the party starts.

How does it work?

If you decide to go on Summer University, you will need to follow the following steps:

  1. Become a member of AEGEE-Delft
  2. Create an AEGEE-Europe intranet account on http://intranet.myaegee.net/login/signUp
  3. Choose your favorite Summer Universities and write a motivation
  4. Apply for your SU on aegee.org/su, with your AEGEE-Europe intranet account
  5. If there are more applicants than places for your SU, the organizers will make a selection based on the motivation letter

1. Become a member

You can do this on-line. Before you become a member, have a look at what it actually is!

2. Create an intranet account

You can do this right away on http://intranet.myaegee.net/login/signUp. Your account will get activated as soon as you become a member of AEGEE-Delft.

3. Choose your SU

You can get a booklet with all SU's in our office during the lunch breaks, or read the booklet on-line

4. Apply for your SU

You can now log in with your intranet account on aegee.org/suYou can specify up to 3 SU's that interest you, along with a short motivation about yourself and why this particular SU appealed to you.

5. Get selected

Eventually you will hear whether and for which SU you are selected. Although there is a chance you are not accepted, this happens only rarely.

If you have any further questions, you may contact the board, post a message on our Summer University Forum, or come to the office. There you can also get a hardcopy of the SU booklet.
