History of AEGEE-Delft

1986-1991

In 1986 an active student Jos den Akker felt the need to establish an EGEE antenna in Delft. He was already a member of EGEE-Leiden and tried to find other students in Delft to help him found a branch in our city as well. An interim board of four students was established on the 11th of November and on the 16th of December 1986 the association was legally founded according to the statutes. Delft organised three congresses during the first five years and the first Summer University in Delft was held in 1989.

From the beginning Delft played a big role on the European level. In 1987 a President’s Meeting was hosted in Delft and the Comité Directeur resided in Delft until 1995.

1991 - 1996

In 1991 the board of AEGEE-Delft decided to expand the Delft tradition of being in suit with tie on every event towards Europe. A lot of money was invested to create a “Delft Clothing Line”. The boxes full of ties were taken to every European event and members of other antennae were very eager to buy a special AEGEE tie. In 1991 the first Winterschool was organised in Delft about Cleaning Technology. The next year the very big congress Space IV was organised, a follow-up a three earlier AEGEE congresses about space. It was set up together with AEGEE-Aachen, Eindhoven, and Enschede and had 550 participants. 1992 also was the year of the first DEO, Delft’s introduction weekend for the new members. In that year it was called RODEO, Rotterdam Delft Ontvangst weekend (Rotterdam Delft reception weekend), and organised together with AEGEE-Rotterdam. In the years to come AEGEE-Delft organised the weekend on its own and so the name was changed to DEO.

The ‘91-‘92 board, encouraged by the successful congress, applied for the 1992 Autumn Agora. However they forgot to properly transfer the organisation to the next board, so everything had to be done in a hurry. The AGORA had a very tight budget of only NLG 4000,- (€ 1815,-), but in the end everything worked out.

The ’93-’94 board managed to organise two big events in one year, a Winterschool about Safe-Tech an a congress “Energy-II”. The office moved from the Mijnbouwplein to the building of Civil Engineering.

1996-2001

AEGEE-Delft kept on being very active, like it had been in the years before. The 10th anniversary was celebrated by a blind date Christmas dinner. Big congresses and Winterschools were organised. In 1995 the Winterschool’s subject was Info-Tech and in 1996 a big congress about transport was organised. Meanwhile the tradition of the DEO weekend was not forgotten and in 1995 and 1996 even crossed the Dutch border to Oostende and Berlin. Representatives of AEGEE-Delft were present at AGORA’s and PM’s, always neatly dressed. In 1996 They expanded the clothing line with dark red AEGEE ties, bow-ties an also chokers for the ladies!

2001-2006

The board of ’01-’02 started with the tradition of giving the board a name. They celebrated the 15th anniversary with the ‘bicycle experience’. Also the tradition of Christmas dinner with AEGEE-Münster started. The next board continued these traditions and started the committee FACT, foreign affairs committee, who organized trips for the international students in Delft. Delft started to become more active on local level. Salsa classes were given and international Parties were introduces, witch were a big success! The board of ’04-’05 organized a lot of activities. On local level a local training course to a gala with AEGEE-Utrecht as on European level, a congress Design & disability and an exchange with AEGEE Odessa, Palermo and St. Petersburg. Then the new board was elected, which only existed out of 2 women. It was a though year but they managed it to continue AEGEE and introduced the new tradition of dinner at our office.
